For example if it sticks out. Place the backing plate on the axle shaft after the outer seal. Make CERTAIN the backing plate is on the correct axle the shoe side facing out and the parking brake cable headed in the right direction.
Once the bearing is pressed on, the only way to remove the backing plate is to destroy the axle bearing and retainer… so make sure you get it right. After packing the bearings with quality wheel bearing grease press the wheel bearing onto the axle. The larger lip goes toward the backingplate splines and the narrowed portion of the bearing assembly goes toward the backing plate.
After carefully pressing on the axle bearing, press the press ring retainer on until it bottoms out against the bearing assembly. Due to the bghter than standard design, press ring may scrape along length of axle. Before installing the assembly into the housing, smear a silicone sealer around the housing end, and between the backing plate and the outer seal flange.
If you want assistance, its ok… thats what we are here for! So give us a call or shoot us an email to schedule an appointment. In order to remove the brake backing plate from the axle assembly, you can use a shop press, or if you do not have a press or a big enough one you can insert a punch into the bearing and hammer it in.
This will break the bearing cage. Pop the bearings out and the plate will slide right off. Then remove the old seal from the axle, clean and prep everything for re-assembly. Measure the overall width of the spacer and remove the necessary amount of material. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. CJ Axles. Thread starter abcdefg Start date Sep 13, Tags axles front money tubes width would. I am getting a CJ-5 and have a couple axle questions. For the AMC Dana 20 I can get one piece axles and weld a truss on it for around what a used Dana 44 will cost, and from what I've read should be about as good.
The Dana 44 has more differential options than the Dana 20 , but I already have the Dana The Dana 30 in front is going to limit tire options, so I would like to find a Dana Other than out of another CJ, what other Dana 44 front ends are the same width? I talked to a guy today that has the same Jeep, he said the Dana 44 in the front of his came from a late 70s Wagoneer, I'd have thought those would be wider?? What are my options here? Bent Active Jeeper. The Dana 20 should be fine once you upgrade to one piece axles and weld the tubes to the housing.
The pinion centerline on the is off set 1. I read somewhere that the rear Dana 44 out of a jeepster commando will work.
If you need to move the tires away from the frame, a AMC Dana 20 wide track will bolt in. Not sure of the track width on the wagoner Dana I think the scout Dana 44 is 57 inches so its pretty close to cj wide track width but the spring perches are wider.
Some people choose to move the springs to the outside of the frame to run a Dana If you aren't going too big on the tires, the Dana 30 can be upgraded with axle shafts that use the larger Dana 44 u joints.
Respected Jeeper Donater. I cut a Waggy 4" narrower for the front. Spring perches are wider on the 76 and up. Used F rotors. Respected Jeeper Lifetime Site Supporter. Click to expand Torxhead Always Off-Roading Jeeper. Vehicle s '86 CJ,,T,,Dana 44s.
